Sandstone Quarry: Unknown

Architect: Charles Bruce

Contractor: A. D. Mc Kay

Architectural Style: Rock-faced cut stone, pressed brick and terra-cotta are all utilized for the building’s facing materials. Stone pilasters divide the lower floors two business halves and central doorway. Glass block was placed in the upper lights. Perforated sandstone appears on the keystones, and labels appear on the second floor, round-headed windows. However, the most elaborate portion of the building is its cornice, which utilizes a variety of decorative devices. A course of both headers and stretcher bricks serve as the coping, and is followed by a row of rounded rowlock bricks or dentils. The next course has a projecting V-shaped design with medallions following it. Billet molding, without spacing, frames compound circular medallions which are an unusual design for Hot Springs. Undoubtedly, this building has the most ornate cornice in the city.

History: On March 11, 1892, Orland Ferguson sold his lot on Chicago Ave where his building burned to P.A. Shope for $1500. Work began on the Barnes - Shope building 9/30/1892. An elegant brick sidewalk with cut stone curbing was placed in front of the building 8/11/93 and was the only first class walk Hot Springs could boast of at the time. More commonly known as the Odd Fellows Building, the fraternal organization purchased the building in two portions: one in 1899 and the remainder in 1905.
